Review: The Rosie Project - Graeme Simsion

Title: The Rosie Project
Author: Graeme Simsion
Publisher: Penguin
Series: Don Tillman #1

Love isn't exact science - but no one told Don Tillman. A handsome thirty-nine-year-old geneticist, Don's never had a second date. So he devises The Wife Project, a scientific test to find the perfect partner. Enter Rosie - 'the world's most incompatible woman' - throwing Don's sage, ordered life into chaos. Just what is this unsettling, alien emotion he's feeling? [Goodreads]

I’m so happy that I finally read The Rosie Project! It’s an entertaining and hilarious read many people would enjoy.

Firstly I want to mention the amazing and unique writing style. It’s quite easy to read and it reflects the personality of our protagonist Don perfectly. The „normal“ language is constantly interrupted by words only Don would use in such a moment. This makes the story so much more reliable.
Don is slowly changing. At first you get only little hints but after a while it becomes quite obvious that something is going on. While developing the character in a completely reliable way Graeme Simsion is also changing his writing style. More characteristic words from Rosie are added to the used language and those sometimes slightly awkward words from Don are reduced. The writing style becomes more „normal“.
This connection between character development and writing style is so amazing and it is my favourite aspects of this book.
Additionally I fell in love with the characters, not instantly but slowly. From the beginning Rosie was a lovable character. Don, however, is a slightly different problem. He is so „different“ and just not „normal“ that you have to get used to his way of acting to start loving him. But after a while you love him with - or because of - all his faults.
Not only the characters are quite unique but also the story is not quite normal. Even though it is not something special ore completely different, you probably won’t find a similar story so often in other books.
The Rosie Project is also highly addicting. I read it in nearly one sitting. I just couldn’t stop reading. I had to know how the story continues. Even though the outcome of Don’s and Rosie’s relationship is - of course - quite obvious, there are so many other aspects of the story you just want to know.
Another reason why I enjoyed reading The Rosie Project so much is that it’s so funny. I had to laugh while reading every few minutes. Don’s behaviour is sometimes just too comical even though he obviously doesn’t intent to be that way, which makes it just more funny.

To sum it up in a view words: The Rosie Project is a highly entertaining and hilarious book with unique characters you slowly fell in love with and a story that’s everything else than common. The connection between writing style and Don’s character development is truly amazing and by far my favourite aspect of this book. I hope to read The Rosie Effect soon because I just cannot get enough of this hilarious story!
